Single Mothers Dress Up as Fathers to Celebrate Father's Day

In the spirit of father's day celebration, some single mothers dressed up as fathers to celebrate fathers day with their children. While some people commended the act, some saw it as totally unnecessary. Perhaps the mothers wanted to feel the void of the fathers in their children's lives, you wouldn't blame them as they have been both father and mother to their children. Take a look at another picture below

3 Gender lessons we learnt from the Interview of First Female in the Field of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria Prof.Olanike Adeyemo

Prof. Olanike Adeyemo  (46) is the First female doctor in the field of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria , she is also the first deputy vice-chancellor in Research , innovation and Strategic Partnerships , University of Ibadan. She was recently interviewed by Olufemi Atoyebi on the Effect of Environmental Pollution and Climate Change, this was an articulate discussion on what should be done to curtail the effects. However my ever- searching eyes could not overlook the gender lessons she gave during her interview as the topic read ' I and My husband share house chores'. Here are some gender lessons from her interview

1. When asked " how did you make it so far?'; She replied it took determination. I partly started this course because i was challenged by my uncle who thought veterinary medicine would be a hard course for me to tackle.Though culturally, women are meant to be heard and not seen and are good enough to be teachers and nurses relegated to the backgrounds , however your determination and vision stands you out as a woman. Lesson 1: You can be who you want to be irrespective of people or societal norms

Gold Digging in Relationships, a He or She Thing?

Almost from when i knew what gold digging was, it was associated with women. You would hear things like; 'don't mind her, she is a gold digger, she is only after him or with him for his money'. Recently though seems Men are more involved in gold digging, its almost like the richer you are as a babe the better, if your parents are rich, then they hang in there to get the best of it. Well am not saying women have stopped digging gold but its like the men are in competition with them now. I have heard a few men say, if she is not rich i can't have anything to do with her and likewise the women. Stories abound of female folks saying, he is just after me because of what i have, i even hear of females that pay guys monthly and vice versa.

Acting President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo joins the "He for She Campaign" and speaks for Gender equality

The Heforshe campaign is a global campaign initiated by UN women to engage men in the advancement of gender equality in the society, by imploring that men pledge support for gender equality, to end gender inequalities and all the social, economic and political negativity against women across the globe . In 2015 the HeforShe Campaign aimed to get one million boys and men across the globe to support its cause but the count fell short. The idea behind the campaign is to see gender inequality not just as a women use but as everyone's issue as a human right issue.

What is Gender roles?

it seems from birth male and female genders have particular paths paved for them . There are names that males bare e.g. Philip. John, Mark and females have their own names exclusive to them too like Mary, Jane etc. It is assumed absurd if you hear a male bare a supposed female name and vice versa. This is also relative to so many things especially in a society like Nigeria, where citizens are accustomed to particular beliefs be it ethnic or religious. Below are some particular myths about male and female gender roles in the society ;

1. A man should be above while a woman is beneath

So you thought nudity on social media was only for females , well check out these Nigerian dudes

Can this be termed what a woman can do, a man can do better? perhaps there would have been an excuse if he was in at the beach or pool. well gender norms are shifting even in Nigeria.

He is naija's social media new wave. His real name is Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju born in 1992.
