it seems from birth male and female genders have particular paths paved for them . There are names that males bare e.g. Philip. John, Mark and females have their own names exclusive to them too like Mary, Jane etc. It is assumed absurd if you hear a male bare a supposed female name and vice versa. This is also relative to so many things especially in a society like Nigeria, where citizens are accustomed to particular beliefs be it ethnic or religious. Below are some myths about male and female gender roles in the society ; 1. A man should be above while a woman is beneath 2. Males should naturally be heirs to their father and take on his name, passing it from generation to generation while a woman marries out of her father's house 3. A woman's place is in the husband's home 4. Males should be bold and courageous and not be seen as weaklings like women 5. Make-ups are solely for women 6. A woman should be homely and submissive , men should be manly and domineering 7. A man should play ball, women should sew 5. Tough jobs are for men a good woman should be a housewife etc. These post are not meant to debunk these myths or argue about them. They would however attempt to show that gender norms are shifting from what they are believed to be. Should this be acceptable? please leave your comment below
