Acting President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo joins the "He for She Campaign" and speaks for Gender
The Heforshe campaign is a global campaign initiated by UN women to engage men in the advancement of gender equality in the society, by imploring that men pledge support for gender equality, to end gender inequalities and all the social, economic and political negativity against women across the globe . In 2015 the HeforShe Campaign aimed to get one million boys and men across the globe to support its cause but the count fell short. The idea behind the campaign is to see gender inequality not just as a women use but as everyone's issue as a human right issue.
Ever since the campaign has continued to aim higher and have seen support from countries across the globe including Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde. Comfort Lamptey, the UN women representative for Nigeria stated that Nigeria would be the 5th country in Africa to launch the campaign platform. Senator Aisha Alhassan, the Nigerian Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development stated that the campaign aims to engage 1 billion boys and men , with the goal that half would be able to take the pledge to support the campaign against global inequality , while others would show more commitment by sponsoring the campaign and be advocates for gender sensitive issues in the country.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo joined the campaign during the inauguration of the campaign in Abuja , he noted that gender equality should be a concern for all, that girls and women should be free to attain their full potential in any society. He noted that full support of gender equality where women and men are able to earn equal pay and all forms of stereotypes ended against women would, would yield an economic bloom and imparts of this can only be imagined.
