Menstrual Hygiene Day

Did you know that 28th May is the World's Menstrual Hygiene Day? it is actually a day set up to educate girls about menstrual hygiene and to advocate for the right of girls to have proper menstrual hygiene facilities both in schools, at home or in the community. This might cross our minds as unnecessary but you have to be a girl or a woman to understand what menstruation is about, you've got to experience a day of it, to understand the importance and the emphasis today should have. That's why one of the objectives set aside for the day is to not only educate girls about this but also boys and male teachers.

Improper care during menstruation can cause damage to the female reproductive organs or the female may come up with one a vaginal thrush or a disease. Not to mention the severe pain many girls undergo during their menstrual periods. Girls about to start and those that have started should be privy of all information about how to handle their period, on the different kinds of sanitary towels available and proper disposal methods. It is also saddening that the price of sanitary towels is increasing by the day, which some people may not be able to afford or buy a little to manage. There should be proper advocacy for these prices to remain low as possible and to be affordable on the average and available throughout the country.

In advocating for gender equality , reproductive systems of genders differ. For there to be an equality as such, it should include the right of girls to proper hygiene facilities in schools and in societies without prejudice, victimization and stereotyping.
