Affirmative Action: On fulfillment of APC promise on National Gender Policy
News lines in Nigeria have been inundated with the ruling party All Progressive Congress
( APC) 's score cards from May 29th, 2017 ( Democracy Day) when the present administration in Nigeria marked 2 years in government. Most of what has been looked at are the campaign promises of the party and how well they have fared in various sectors of the economy. Daily Trust Ng, wrote on 'Top 10 Campaign Promises APC has not fulfilled' among them was listed the unfulfilled National Gender Policy.
The National Gender Policy as promised, involved to include 35% of appointive positions for women in this administration but as it stands we have only five female ministers in this Administration namely;
Minister of State Foreign Affairs ; Khadija Abba Ibrahim
Minister of State Budget and National Planning : Hija Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed
Minister of Finance : Kemi Adeosun
Minister of Women Affairs: Aisha Jummai Alhassan
Minister of State, Trade, Industry and Investment: Aisha Abubakar
This falls below the 35% that should be. I believe that if women are duly represented in government issues of gender equality would be given priority. Additionally, it would improve the interest of younger females to be in politics without fear of prejudice, Stereotypes or Segregation. More political spaces should be created for women, we should walk the talk of achieving gender equality in Nigeria.
