The quest for Bigboy-ism and Show off
The advent of social media, came with the need for people to share their stories online ,from who you are, to what you sell and the kind of lifestyle you live. While social media offers some form of entertainment and sharing which enables one to connect to many , there are ills attached or that have been attributed to it. Stories abound of the girls who were murdered and robbed via social media dating sites and men who were duped form these sites too. Also there is the show off, particularly with our celebrities and artist, there is the quest to be a Bigboy and Show of your wealth.
Recently, an artist by stage name Dammy Krane was arrested in the United States for trying to book private airplanes with fake credit cards . Apparently this entertainer has been known to post pictures of affluence on diverse social media platforms including the ones he was in a private planes. That's one of many, there is Wizkid, Davido, Iceprince, Daddy Freeze, phyno, Olamide etc. These are well known artist in Nigeria, they showcase their music and ideas as well as their wealth. They show of Rolex wrist watches, big cars, choice homes etc. And they have ardent followers in fact massive followers that applaud their show offs. These people are role models to the youths and most youths begin to tow the same paths to become Bigboys and to show off. To many it's a proof that you have arrived and you've become wealthy. Not caring where these wealth come from or if it's just a mere fake show-off.
Today there was a Twitter troll on a self -acclaimed billionaire/ Bigboy (Hushpuppi) he is known to showcase millions of Naria spent in night clubs, loads of dollar bills, designer wears and materials. No-one knows yet the source of his wealth. He called out two artists, stating that they wear fake Rolex watches and the replies came pouring in with other parties trying to belittle him with what they have and youths taking sides on who to support. Its a trend occasionally some call out other's for wearing fakes and there is a supposed battle for who is the biggest boy , who spends more and who wears and uses more expensive stuffs.
The need to acquire wealth and be the boss in town for boys is not new , but at what cost? Would you rather be hailed for a fleeting moment or you want to fulfil your purpose in life? The constant pressure and the stereotypes of who is a Bigboy and who is not exist in the society. However life should have more meaning to us than materialism.
